I am a young man from Chile who currently lives in Ontario, Canada. I have two great loves in life, animals, and the practice of medicine. Following in the footsteps of my father, a physician, I decided to devote my life to curing our animal friends since I have loved them so dearly ever since I was a little boy, especially horses, for me, the most noble creature of God’s creation. I also very much appreciate sports, and, thus, I have a keen interest in the care of racehorses that forms the basis of one of our oldest and most noble pastimes, horse racing.

This is why I chose to pursue and complete my bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine and become a medico veterinario in my native Chile, a degree which is seen as equivalent to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in Canada. I am applying for an internship position with your highly esteemed university in equine medicine and surgery. Equine surgery is the area in which I have chosen to develop my professional concentration and I am devoted to the cause of lifelong learning in this area. After completing your internship program, I plan to apply for a surgery residency for the following year.

I hope to make important contributions in the future to research in our field, particularly in lameness. My long-term plan is to return to my native Chile so that I will be able to share the expertise that I have learned in North America with my compatriots back home. In fact, I want very much to become the most distinguished specialist in equine surgery in the history of my country. My dream is to teach veterinary medicine at a prominent teaching hospital and work to radically improve the quality of veterinary care nationwide.

I am a very friendly, outgoing, and compassionate young man who has long been involved in volunteer activities, helping to build homes for poor people in Chile as well as treating their animals free of charge. I worked along with my university helping many of the neediest farmers in Chile with veterinary treatments and orientations.

My volunteer work with the poor helped me to appreciate how important animals are in people’s lives, especially when they are among one’s most prized possessions and limited resources. I am hard working, very honest, and very dedicated to professional ethical standards. I always maintain an incredibly positive attitude and work well both independently and in teams, always placing a priority emphasis on the cultivation and appreciation of team spirit.

I am a strong candidate for this position because of my level of experience in the field since I have already begun my second internship in equine surgery which I will complete in 2011. My first internship was in the USA and now, this second one is here in Canada. I hope very much to be accepted to your program because it is important to also complete an internship at a university before applying for a residency program, particularly since I plan to build a long and distinguished career in the university setting after returning to my native Chile.

The greatest contribution that I might be able to make to society would be to go back to my country and improve the standards and quality of veterinary medicine on a national level, primarily by devoting myself to research and publication concerning the greatest challenges and opportunities for Chile to excel and become a model for other Latin American countries in our care of animals. I look forward to inspiring new generations of Chilean veterinarians to also excel.

When I was twelve my family and I lived in England for a year while my father completed a fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesia. Later, I traveled alone to Australia for 7 months as an exchange student. On one of my summer vacations, I worked as a lift operator in a ski resort in the USA. Getting to know people from many diverse cultures has helped me to develop new perspectives on life and to become a very open-minded person who gets along well with everyone.

I have come to fully embrace English as my own language as well, often even dreaming in English. I rejoice in the way that people of all the cultures that I have met are animal lovers and we share this bond and interest together.

I assure you that I will give my all to your program and I keenly look forward to meeting you soon and having the opportunity to demonstrate my profound devotion to my field. Thank you for considering my application to your program.
