Born and raised in Spain, my first language is Catalan and my second Spanish. We lived in several distinct parts of the country as I was growing up. We also lived in France for several years, near the Swiss border, near to Geneva. I became fluent in French and English by late childhood and as long as I can remember, I have loved reading, with books piled all around my room, my own books, library books, constantly reading. I have spent my life so far mostly reading, in all four of my languages, these days more English than anything else. The library has always been my favorite public space. It surprises no one who knows me that I am applying to graduate school in Library Science.
I have known for a long time that I want to go to graduate school in the UK. I lived in the UK almost 2 years from 2003 through 2005 and this did wonders for my English and I have kept it up, but I want to return to the English-speaking world for my studies and I have my sights set on the UK. My first choice among MSc Programs in the Information and Library Studies Program at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. I am most impressed by the sheer excellence of your program and the focus of your curriculum on precisely the areas in which I seek a full immersion experience.
I first studied Nursing and worked as a Nurse for several years while studying Anthropology, going on to do research and work at a museum. I completed a Fellowship at Sheffield University in the UK where I worked on ageing issues. Next, I accompanied my husband to the US where I worked for the University of Chicago as a data gatherer. Our next move was back to Spain, first Barcelona, then Madrid. I worked as a senior consultant for an international company focused on the health and social sectors.
By the end of 2009 we had moved to Geneva, Switzerland, on the French side, and I earned my first master's degree, the MPHIL in Research. I especially enjoyed my collaboration with the WHO in the years that followed, working in patient safety. By this time, however, I was on my way to becoming a mother which would occupy a great deal of my time for the next several years. Now forty-six, children growing up, it is time for me to fully restart my career with the MSc in Information and Library Studies. Following years of personal change, growth, questioning, working with a professional life coach, etc. I am convinced that MLIS is the right path for me. I love history, current issues, politics, and news, and I very much enjoy helping the public, serving as an administrator, researcher, and helping people in the community to access the right information at the right time. I also adore ancient documents, historical books, and archives of all sorts.
