I am applying to your novel and exciting program because I eat, sleep, and breathe architecture and I want to learn how to continue to do so in increasingly sustainable ways. I have loved buildings and landscape since I was a little girl and have long developed a practiced eye for design. I am currently employed by New York City helping to manage renovations for the Public School System. In your program, I am particularly looking forward to doing extensive research in the economics of Biophilia and why designing with nature in mind makes financial sense.
I am a young woman who is not only an extremely hard worker but also highly detail and goal oriented. When I find myself in a sink-or-swim situation, I always swim. I am a fighter, and I am determined to someday reach the top in my field: the quest for smoother integration between architecture and living systems.
A US citizen since 2007, I was born in Guyana and raised mostly in New Jersey. I began travelling in my junior year of High School, going first to Paris with my art class in May 2000. In the summer of 2001, my family and I went to Barbados, Guyana, and Suriname. It was the first time I had gone back to Guyana, and I found my ‘home’ country mesmerizing. I dream of going back there again at some point in my career to help them network in sustainability concepts and applications.
In 2002, my family and I went to Holland, Italy, Switzerland and London and I was able to soak up as much of both old and new building design in Europe as possible. Later, while in the Architecture Club in college, I traveled to Spain in 2007 and Greece in 2008. On my own, I have traveled to Puerto Rico (2010), Mexico (2011), and the Dominican Republic (2012).
I hope to contribute to the diversity of your program not only as a young woman from Guyana but also as a woman of Indian ancestry. My paternal grandmother taught me both Hindi and Sanskrit and I can read, write, and sing in both languages although it is difficult for me to communicate verbally since I have had so little practice.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering in June of 2008 and since then I have taken several certificate courses including a 30-hour OSHA Training course that I completed in November of 2009 and a Supported Scaffold User Certificate earned in June 2009. Most important, however, has been the Certificate that I earned from the Construction Management Association of America, completed in October 2012.
I am especially excited about the Capstone Projects since I want to learn everything that I can about sustainable, especially reusable construction materials. I see your program as my best opportunity for an in-depth engagement with the design of urban green roofs for modularity and recyclability, the heavenly idea of roof top gardens with recycling water supply.
