For the past six years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic and professional careers. I have committed myself to aiding the community both as a lifeguard and paramedic, and in my special dedication to the study of Biology. While I have enjoyed the challenges and intrinsic rewards of my jobs, I have always felt that something was missing, a certain spark to ignite my passion for the outdoors. I yearn to bring my love of the land to others, to work to preserve its beauty so that others may take away a greater appreciation for our beloved earth and its natural wonders.
Having lived and grown up in XXXX, I have been immersed in some of the most beautiful lands in America. Shenandoah National Park, George Washington, and Monongahela National Forests all within a few miles of my home, enveloped by the Blue Ridge and Massanutten Mountains. These places have been my backyard for my entire life, my playground, refuge, and place for contemplation.
I have reached a point in my academics where I am eager to engage in research in stream water in the Shenandoah River as well as the forest restoration ecology project. I also want to explore the possibility of research in areas of Infectious diseases in wildlife as well as influences on patterns of forest regeneration. XXXX is my sole choice for further education and XXXX's Biology program is well-staffed, with small classes, with many opportunities for research into ecology and environmental issues and effective contact with professors. Additionally, access to ongoing faculty research and labs, plus seminars of innovative research and theory is excellent. This sort of exposure and hands-on research is exactly what I need to be effective in my career and will help me to make a fluid transition to a professional position.
Through an academic relationship with XXXX's Department of Biology, and a graduate degree in Biology, I will be fully equipped to bring my dreams - of either teaching Biology at a community college or serving as a Forest Ranger - to fruition. I have been impressed by the work of my biology instructor, my role model, and am eager to follow a similar path. I am most keen to delve into research focused on the development of checks and balances for an organization's environmental impact.
Biology is completely intertwined with who I am, and where I want to go in life. No other field has nor ever could bring me the same level of personal or professional satisfaction and will be the vehicle by which I contribute to society and the future of our fragile ecosystems.
